Gobions Workparty Sunday 9th November 2003

As last Sunday was rained off - you may have noticed that it rarely rains on a Sunday between 09:30 and 12:30 ! - we were glad to be back giving the west boundary path and the paths around the Leach Fields a trim to make it easier to walk over the winter. Michael Jonas was busy on the west boundary path layering hedges.

For those who know, apologies. For those who don't - layering hedges is a process where young plants (in this case hawthorn) are planted in a row alongside a path, about a metre apart. 3 to 5 years later, when they are between 1 and 2 metres high, about half of the stem low down is trimmed away and the plant bent over at 90 degrees. As it is still connected to the roots, it continues to grow, with the "side shoots" now growing upwards. The wound heals over and the hedge is formed.
